About Meat & Fish Co.

Local Fisherman in Kona, Hawaii

Meat & Fish Co. is committed to support North Carolina producers of meat, fish, poultry, pork and game. We are equally committed to source the finest quality "boutique" proteins produced by our American farmers, fishermen and global producers. We love the people who are committed to our industry and will offer our colleagues the diverse selection of hard to find local, national and international proteins that are eco-friendly, sustainably harvested and humanely treated.

Meat & Fish is the anchor tenant at CharlotteŐs 7th Street Public Market. The market is a non-profit organization focusing on supporting North and South Carolina producers of produce, proteins and artisan entrepreneurs. We are also committed to educating the community on how "Eating Local" has great advantages for healthier life-styles and supporting our local farms and fishing industry that will enhance our local economic growth. Please come visit us and support all of our vendors as we all try to make a healthier impact in our community and create a gathering place for all our friends and neighbors.

Our Story

CEO Michael LaVecchia bids on fresh tuna at an auction in Kona, Hawaii

In December of 2011, the 7th Street Public Market opened at 225 East Seventh Street in Charlotte with a mission "to celebrate the food culture of the Carolinas and promote local and regional farmers, food artisans, and entrepreneurs." The Market is a partnership of civic, community, and corporate leaders working together to bring wholesome and healthy locally made and locally produced food products to the community.

Michael Smith, President and CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners has said, "We want to create an environment that recognizes and celebrates the diversity of our citizens and fosters their interaction. We also want to strengthen the historic link and natural dependency of our rural and urban communities."

7Th Street Public Market will be governed and operated by a Board of Directors chaired by Dr Dan Murrey, a former Mecklenburg County Commissioner, and former head of the Democratic National Convention. The Board includes representatives from the City and County, Central Piedmont Community College, Johnson & Wales University, Carolinas Health Care Systems, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, Charlotte Center City Partners, and Falfurrias Capital Partners. It is obvious that the Market is at the heart of the community, and dedicated to the very same principles and beliefs that have governed all of our business ventures, and we decided immediately that we wanted to be a part of it. We had the opportunity to anchor the market with a strong presence doing the things we do best.

Shortly after the opening of the Market, we opened Meat & Fish Company which is committed to supporting North Carolina producers of meat, fish, poultry, pork and game. We will also source the finest quality "boutique" proteins produced by our American farmers, fishermen and global producers. We love the people who are committed to our industry and will offer our colleagues the diverse selection of hard to find local, national and international proteins that are eco-friendly, sustainably harvested and humanely treated. At the same time, we are equally committed to demonstrating how "Eating Local" has great advantages for healthier life-styles, and we support our local farms and fishing industry that enhance our local economic growth.

We fully endorse the way in which the market will operate. The concept of a true farmer's market as envisioned by 7th Street Market might be a novel approach, but it is the way business has been done across the world for thousands of years. The "hunter/gatherers"" of the world brought their goods to market and sold them to fellow citizens, and all the rules and practices of business had to apply. The products had to be available, fresh, desirable, and priced responsibly. In 2012 and beyond, these requirements are no less true and lie at the center of Meat & Fish.

In reading over the originating documents for the creation of the market, we were immediately drawn to it, both because of the belief in what they are doing, and because of the success we have achieved over 20 years in operating in much the same way. We have experienced both the day-to-day operational challenges, and the strategic and financial advantages of such an approach. We have operated with the same heartfelt beliefs and guiding principles in every aspect of this exciting business enterprise.

We have sold fresh seafood out of the back of a van at numerous open-air markets since I was a student at Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, and during our summer markets here in Charlotte. At the same time, I co-founded my family's business, Poseidon, one of the largest purveyors of seafood in the Southeast. I previously served as CEO of SeafoodS.com, but am now devoting myself fully to Meat and Fish Company. Just as been the case for farmer's markets for thousands of years, our products are, and will continue to be, "available, fresh, desirable, and priced responsibly."

My family is well known for the excellence of its many restaurants throughout the city of Charlotte and its surrounding communities. Some are established landmarks, some are brand new, and still others are on the drawing board. But all embody the same sense of excellence that will govern what we do at the Meat & Fish Company.

What we do there will have the full benefit of our family's expertise in virtually every aspect of its operations. We will continue to do what it takes to remain at the leading edge of food delivery, across all the approaches we employ, and all the venues we occupy. At the 7th Street Public Market, we welcome the chance to be part of a robust business environment, and we expect to be at the core of what they intend to do.
